Louise Slater completed her B.A. in 1979 in psychology from Furman University with a concentration in Business Administration. She then earned a Master's Degree in Applied Behavioral Psychology (with honors) from Western Michigan University in 1981. Her thesis was published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management.

After graduating, Louise had a distinguished career with Wilson Learning Corporation assessing needs, customizing curricula, and building performance management systems for large companies that spanned more than a decade. She began as a performance consultant. She then became a National Account Manager and gained national recognition for sales performance, including being named "Salesperson of the Year." However, the honor she values most is being named the first recipient of "Love in the Marketplace," an internal company award symbolizing the caring, client-centered approach to selling.

Following her employment at Wilson Learning, Louise Slater and her husband, Steve, formed an independent consulting firm, Catalyst Consulting, Inc. Part of her work with Catalyst has been serving as an adjunct faculty member for The University of South Carolina Moore School of Business. She has taught public supervisory programs and team experimental leadership programs. She also has developed custom courses for clients such as Duracell, Toyota, and Alcatel.

In 1997, Louise became the non-executive Chairman of a privately owned steel fabricating company. She works to create productive working relationships between the board, the executive management and the ownership.

For the past five years, Louise has been actively mentoring three young women paroled from the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). In May 2004, Louise became Chairman of the Board of a new non-profit organization called Friends of Juvenile Justice (FJJ). The purpose of this organization is to help prevent incarceration, rehabilitate, and transition at-risk youth into productive school and work environments.
